Dragon couldn't help but notice the total absence of knights to challenge or damsels to distress in the 21st century, so he decided to re-brand himself and turn his talents to more practical applications.

The Golden Age of Illustration Exhibit at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art

Last week I trekked out to Malibu with a few illustrator pals to see the “Illustrating Modern Life: The Golden Age of American Illustration” exhibit at Pepperdine’s Weisman Museum. If you live in the area, you should make the effort to visit this fine show -- don't miss the opportunity to see these beautiful works first hand.

The exhibit, with works culled from The Kelly Collection of American Illustration, features about 60 drawings and paintings by legendary artists Howard Pyle, Charles Dana Gibson, N. C. Wyeth, J. C. Leyendecker, Jesse Wilcox Smith, Norman Rockwell, Dean Cornwell, Coles Phillips, McClelland Barclay, and more. All were masters of their craft whose work was featured in popular magazines and books of the day and helped influence and shape popular culture during illustration's "Golden Age.".

The show will run through March 31, 2013. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Sunday, 11am – 5pm. Both admission and parking are free.

This drawing of Mr. Garrulity was originally done for "Lost in Lexicon", a middle-grade novel I illustrated. It was only after the book was published that I realized he resembled my grandfather (without the stocking cap, of course.)

As a child I was always spooked by the concept of The Sandman. I imagined him as a shadowy, sinister creature who would creep into my room in the dead of night. Definitely the stuff of nightmares!
